The 5th grade students at Ryerson have been exploring the fascinating world of hydroponics, a method of growing plants without soil.
As part of this hands-on learning experience, each student has been given the opportunity to bring home a plant that they have been growing using hydroponic techniques. This project aims to provide students with a practical understanding of plant biology and the innovative methods used in modern agriculture.
Hydropic systems require much less water than traditional soil-based systems do. They are also space efficient, as they do not require large planters and can be grown and maintained in an environment as simple as a plastic cup. Other benefits of hydroponic systems include their ability to grow faster and produce more, and the fact that they do not carry any soil-borne diseases and pests.
The classroom hydroponics has been a fun learning experience that the students can take home with them, both by plant and participation, and hopefully a practice that they may remember as future horticulturalists!
The Randall Carter "Let Grow" Tree is getting it's first leaves as students share independent tasks they're trying out at home to grow their independence!
Each of the 2nd Grade classes at Pines Lake Elementary adopted a Polar Bear from Polar Bear International which allows students to track a living polar bear in the wild. The donation made for each bear supports polar bear conservation. Each class is able to not only track their bear, but receive updates and watch live video footage of where their bear is located. With the adoption, Polar Bear International gave a stuffed polar bear to represent the one polar bear in the wild. Students will each have the opportunity to take home and write about their own weekend adventures with the polar bear!
