Wayne Hills Athlete of the Month: Ava Connolly |
Wayne Hills High School Female Wrestler
Saying that Wayne Hills senior Ava Connolly is athletic would be an understatement. She is a three-year varsity softball player (her fourth season coming up this spring), she played basketball for a season as well as flag football last year for the Patriots. But what she’s done this winter season is remarkable. It’s what has earned her the December 2025 Athlete of the Month honors for her school and demonstrates amazing versatility. Article by John "Ferris" Meredith/Photo by Ava Connolly. In this, her first and only high school wrestling season, Connolly finished December with a 10-5 record, but two of those losses came against experienced, top-ranked wrestlers, where she lost by just one point. Her coach said that this “speaks volumes about her potential and her refusal to back down under pressure.” Read more at TapIntoWayne

| Wayne Valley Athlete of the Month: Peter Swede |
Wayne Valley High School Swimming: Racing 50m, 200m Freestyle, 100m Breast Stroke, 200m Individual
Consistency, steady improvement, and leadership are among the qualities every high school coach hopes for in student athletes. Peter Swede, senior captain of the Wayne Valley High School boys swim team, has shown all those traits and, along with his stellar December performance in the pool, have helped him earn the title of Wayne Valley Athlete of the Month. Across December — and extending through the season to date — Swede did not place lower than second in any event, whether swimming individually or as part of a relay. He finished the month with nine first-place finishes and nine second-place finishes, accounting for roughly 60 team points and making him Wayne Valley’s leading scorer by more than 12 points. Ryerson Celebrates 5th Grade Published Authors! |
We are thrilled to announce that four of our 5th grade students—William Q., Emily M., Julia B., and Liana H.—have achieved publication! They participated in the highly competitive national "Spook Squad - The Boo Crew" writing contest organized by Young Writers USA. Each student earned a “Talent for Writing” award, and all four were selected to have their original work published. This accomplishment continues a proud tradition, marking the 8th consecutive year that Ryerson School has celebrated published student authors. We are incredibly proud of their dedication and creative writing success!

Students Build Big Ideas in Mrs. Vander Pyl’s Media Class
|
Students in Mrs. Vander Pyl’s Media class, at Pines Lake Elementary, recently combined literacy, creativity, and engineering during an engaging hands-on lesson. Students began by listening to the story Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty, a fun and inspiring book that encourages curiosity, problem-solving, and thinking like an engineer.
After the read-aloud, students worked together in small teams to take on an exciting challenge: building a bridge using KAPLA planks. Using ideas from the story, students planned, tested, and redesigned their structures as they learned how balance, strength, and teamwork are essential in engineering.
The activity encouraged collaboration, communication, and critical thinking as students shared ideas, solved problems, and supported one another. Laughter, focus, and creativity filled the Media Center as bridges grew taller and stronger with each attempt.
Mrs. Vander Pyl’s Media class continues to show how stories can spark imagination and lead to meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that connect reading with real-world STEM skills. |

Randall Carter's Kindness Crew Spreads Winter Cheer! |
Last week, Randall Carter's amazing Kindness Crew, led by their advisor Mrs. Poliandro, spread some truly magical winter cheer throughout the school! With a cart in tow, students traveled from room to room serving up smiles—and delicious treats—including hot chocolate, warm cider, cookies, popcorn, and more.
The surprise was a welcome moment of joy for teachers and staff. Mrs. Domm, a 4th grade teacher at RC, shared, “It instantly changed my mood for the better. A little kindness is just what I needed!”
Moments like these remind us how powerful simple acts of kindness can be. Thank you, Kindness Crew, for warming our hearts (and our hands!) and making our school an even brighter place |

Learning How Water Shapes Our World in Second Grade |
Ms. Moore’s second grade class at Pines Lake Elementary became scientists as they explored how water moves across the land. Students learned how water flows downhill to form streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes by creating their own miniature mountains and rain showers. Using hands-on models, the class observed how water traveled from high points to low points, just like it does in nature. This engaging activity helped students better understand landforms, water systems, and the important role water plays in shaping our environment. Learning truly flowed in this exciting science lesson!

Audio Visual Club at Ryerson |
Ryerson students in the Audio Visual Club explore the exciting world of digital media by learning how to create and use audio files, design digital content, and operate video cameras. They develop skills in camera stabilization, lighting, script writing, storyboarding, digital imaging, green screen technology, stop-motion animation, and video editing software. Throughout the process, students apply the leadership skills they learn through the Leader in Me program as they collaborate to create, produce, and direct their own original audio and visual projects.
