Students and teachers from Wayne Hills and Wayne Valley visited the three middle schools to deliver demonstrations and presentations. This event gave 8th grade students at Anthony Wayne MS, George Washington MS, and Schuyler Colfax MS, a hands-on opportunity to explore the programs and opportunities awaiting them at Wayne Township Public School high schools. The showcases highlighted elective courses in the Technology Education Department including Auto, Computer Aided Design, Graphic Design/Yearbook, Interior Design, Manufacturing and Woodworking, Photography, Robotics and TV Production. The captains and officers of Wayne Hills SDA took a Broadway workshop for the Broadway show The Great Gatsby. The girls were instructed by a Great Gatsby principal dancer where they learned a dance that was similar to one in the show. They then enjoyed watching the show that same evening.
Fifth grade students were invited to apply to this program, commiting a portion of their school day to being in a classroom with their special needs peers. During the time they spend together, the kids interact and build relationships, each having the opportunity to learn from one another.
The students that were selected for the STARS program were involved in an in-school training, hosted by special education teachers, Laurie Collins and Heather DeFilippo. Training included a presentation on autism, and activities for the students to participate in that led to them making connections between them and the students theyโd be spending time alongside.
The STARS classroom visits just kicked off for this school year in January 2025, and relationships are already beginning to blossom within the classrooms. This program offers peer-to-peer learning opportunities, and many of the kids involved have reported it as being the highlight of their week!
Pines Lake Elementary School recently came together for a special literacy celebration as students participated in the annual One Book, One School event. This yearโs featured book, Fenway and Hattie by Victoria J. Coe captivated students as they engaged in a variety of activities centered around the school-wide reading.
The event kicked off with enthusiasm as every student received a copy of Fenway and Hattie, a heartwarming story told from the perspective of an energetic Jack Russell Terrier named Fenway. Throughout the month, classrooms participated in discussions and activities that deepened their understanding of the bookโs themes, including friendship, perspective-taking, and adaptability.
One of the highlights of the event was the daily trivia challenge. Students eagerly answered questions about Fenway and Hattie, showcasing their comprehension and attention to detail while competing for fun prizes. The friendly competition added excitement to the reading experience and encouraged students to engage more deeply with the story.
Beyond reading, Mrs. Vander Pyl, the Library Media Specialist arranged a special visit from Morristown Seeing Eye, an organization dedicated to training guide dogs for individuals with visual impairments. This experience provided students with a real-world connection to the story, as they learned about the important role dogs play in assisting people and the special bond between humans and their canine companions.
The grand finale of the One School, One Book event was a highly anticipated visit from Fenway and Hattie author, Victoria J. Coe. At the end of January, students had the incredible opportunity to meet the author, ask questions about her writing process and gain insights into what inspired her beloved characters. The students in the upper grades enjoyed a writing workshop where students learned to write using a dogโs perspective. Coeโs visit left students feeling inspired and excited about the power of storytelling.
Students at Lafayette are buzzing with excitement over the launch of winter Cub Clubs, a collaborative effort between the school's PTO and its dedicated teachers. These clubs offer a diverse range of activities designed to engage students' interests and foster new friendships. From the ooey-gooey fun of Slime Club to the star-studded performances of Karaoke Club, there's something for everyone. Budding artists can explore their creativity in the Drawing Club, while athletes can get active with Homerun Kickball and the fast-paced action of Pickleball. This partnership exemplifies the strong connection between the school and its families, all working together to enrich the educational experience for Lafayette students.
The 4th and 5th grade students at Ryerson have taken on leadership roles in running their school store, Pawmart, and they are doing an incredible job! They take on responsibilities such as:
- Ordering Products: They select and order the products sold at the store. They consider what items would be popular and beneficial for their peers.
- Selling Products: Our young entrepreneurs manage the sales process, ensuring that transactions are smooth and customers are satisfied with their purchases.
- Marketing: The students use creative strategies to promote the store and its products. They design posters, create announcements, and even utilize digital platforms to reach a wider audience.
- Interviewing New Employees: As part of their leadership experience, they conduct interviews to select new team members for the store. This helps them develop important communication and decision-making skills.
- Training New Employees: Once new employees are selected, our student leaders train them to ensure they understand their roles and responsibilities, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment.
We are incredibly proud of the dedication and enthusiasm our students have shown in these roles. Their involvement in Pawmart not only enhances their learning experience, but also builds essential life skills such as teamwork, responsibility, and entrepreneurship.
Thank you to the Ryerson PTO for partnering with us and supporting us to offer our students such amazing opportunities!
Wayne Hills HS graduate (2015), Lizzy Senowitz, and mother, Susan Senowitz, a paraprofessional at Lafayette ES kept busy during COVID and wrote a book. Their new young adult novel entitled โWhy Is This So Easy For You?โ has just been published by Vanguard Press and is available on Amazon. The novel encompasses the themes of the importance of family, education, self confidence, and kindness. The writing process was truly a collaboration and reflects Susanโs experience teaching at an all girlsโ private school and Lizzyโs love of dance.
