The Wayne Valley High School Captains Council visited Randall Carter for the 2nd & 7 Program and read Hog Mollie books to second grade students. The mission of 2nd & 7 is to promote reading by providing free books and positive role models to kids while encouraging youth athletes of the community to pay it forward. Each Senior high school student athlete is chosen by a coach of a sport to participate in the program.
Since the beginning of the year, the new House System at AWMS has truly come to life, bringing students, staff, and families together to support a unified school culture. Events kicked off this year with Sorting Day, where students were randomly sorted into their Houses. As students picked their Houses, they were reminded, “You don’t choose the House - the House chooses you.” To help plan for future events, an election day was hosted and a House Council was assembled. Since then, there have been three exciting House Days with more still to come.
So far, we’ve seen incredible engagement in school-wide events, including pep rallies with cheering for Houses, as well as meaningful school-wide service projects that have shown our students' dedication to giving back to the community. Our students’ enthusiasm has been contagious. Additionally, character education lessons have been shared, helping to foster values like teamwork, respect, and leadership within each House.
But the fun doesn’t stop there! Students and whole Houses are now earning points throughout the school day—whether they’re participating in classroom activities, demonstrating positive behavior, or getting involved in House-sponsored events. The points are a fun way to build camaraderie and instill a sense of friendly competition, all while promoting a positive and supportive learning environment.
As we continue to roll out this exciting initiative, we can’t wait to see even more growth in our House System. We are so proud of how our students have embraced this new opportunity, and we look forward to seeing how our community continues to thrive through these connections.
Stay tuned for more updates. Anthony Wayne is an AWesome place, filled with “Four Houses, One Family.”
George Washington Middle School students Haley Bariso, 8th, and Alaina Dennison, 8th, wanted to find ways to help the community and earn service hours for National Junior Honor Society. They partnered with St. Joseph's Children's Hospital to collect supplies for their Child Life Specialist to use with patients - books, markers, colored pencils, crayons, and small toys. To accompany the supplies, the students made dozens of Valentine's cards. The supplies and messages were delivered to hospitalized children last Friday, with help from therapy dog, Roddy.
On February 14th, the Wayne Valley Executive Student Council hosted our annual Pep Rally. Games included Hungry Hungry Hippos, Air Mattress Relay, Tug of War, and a Balloon Pop. The event's highlight was the participation of many teachers in different events, including a Teacher Inflatable Relay Race. The winner of the day was the seniors, but the grade-level competition is still on with Penny Wars! All proceeds go to Relay for Life.
Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have been known for identifying and celebrating the creative voices of young artists and writers, and is one of the most distinguished programs for student achievement in the arts. They have recognized some of the nation’s most celebrated artists and writers while they were teenagers, including Tschabalala Self, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, José Parlá, Amanda Gorman, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates, and Andy Warhol.
This year Wayne Hills High School's Photography students from Photo 1 through AP Photo 4 submitted their best work to the contest, resulting in an impressive 186 awards—more than double last year’s total! This includes 40 Gold Keys, 59 Silver Keys and 87 Honorable Mentions. Gold Key recipients will now advance to the national level, with medalists announced in March.
Shown are a select few of the Gold Key Winners Work. Click here for a list of all students and their awards.
