Two students from Wayne Township Public Schools received the prestigious recognition of "Unsung Hero" this week. Students who have made a lasting impact through unique and outstanding contributions to their schools and community have been selected. This program, given as a testament to a student's values, honors an Unsung Hero from each of Passaic County school districts in partnership with the New Jersey School Boards Association, the Passaic County School Boards Association, and the Passaic County Education Association.
Matthew Polifonte - 12th grade at Wayne Hills High School
"Matthew is always positive, joyful, and full of questions. He lives life to the fullest and takes on challenges like a lion."
Francesca DiGiovanni - 12th grade at Wayne Valley High School
"Francesca was recognized for her dedication to our school community and her never-ending kindness and compassion."
Kristopher Mikahil received the George Washington Middle School Character in Action Award for his heroic actions in saving a member of his community. Kristopher embodies the school motto, βTake Care of Yourself, Take Care of Others, and Take Care of this Place,β both in and out of school. He exemplified this by ensuring a lost child was safely returned to their family, protecting them from the frigid temperatures. Kristopher is a true leader, and we are immensely proud of him.
A celebration of What Makes Us Unique
Ryersonβs recent Leader In Me Family Night was a heartwarming event that brought families together to celebrate what makes each of them unique and special. The evening was designed to create an open space for families to connect, reflect, and share what sets them apart. The highlight of the night was the creative activity where families each make their own unique snowflake. With materials provided, families synergized to design and craft their own snowflakes which reflected the individuality of each family. No two snowflakes were the same, just as no two families are alike!
This school year, 18 students from Wayne Valleyβs Italian Classes (Italian 2, 3, & 4) are crossing into uncharted territory: a school field trip to Italy. Over the week-long spring break in April, Professor Iannacco and students will be embarking on a journey among different cities in Italy; three studentsβ families will also join them. Although Iannacco has done this trip around ten times, this will be her first time doing so at Wayne Valley.
The Italian class students are headed to Rome, Vatican City, Siena, Florence, Venice, and Murano. Each of these cities has something unique to offer. Rome has the beautiful Colosseum, Vatican City has the Vatican, Siena has the Palazzo Pubblico, Florence has the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Venice has stunning waterways, and Murano has the unique art of glass making. Professor Iannacco visits these specific cities because they can be considered as some of the βartβ cities of Italy.
While she hopes that her students excel in learning the Italian language, Iannacco also wants her students to become fascinated with Italian culture and Italyβs role in history such as Italyβs influence during the Renaissance. This trip, she believes, will allow her students to become more connected to Italy and inspire students to want to learn more about both the language and the country. Moreover, Iannacco hopes that this trip will inspire Wayne Valley to plan similar field trips for more than the language courses. Her vision includes the art, history, food, and literature programs in the school. Iannacco believes that βthe limits are endless.β

This March, our fifth-grade Spanish students have come together to celebrate Women's History Month by recognizing and honoring the achievements of inspiring women from around the world. Through a creative and educational project, students researched and summarized the biographies of influential women, using both English and Spanish to share their contributions to society.
The students highlighted the unique qualities and accomplishments of each woman, incorporating descriptive adjectives such as "brave" (valiente) and "intelligent" (inteligente), and even found empowering quotes that inspired them. The culmination of their hard work can be seen on a beautiful bilingual bulletin board that showcases their research, stories, and inspiring messages in both languages.
This project not only taught the importance of celebrating womenβs contributions across history, but also helped students practice their Spanish language skills and express their creativity. The bulletin board serves as a visual reminder of the strength, resilience, and brilliance of women throughout history and continues to inspire all who pass by.
