On March 11th, a NJ Title 1 Grant was used so that all of the MD classes at Ryerson Elementary School had an amazing opportunity to go on a field trip to Lifetown in Livingston, NJ where “Every Ability is Celebrated.” Lifetown provided students with real life experiences where students were able to practice life skills, gain confidence, and build friendships.
The first stop on the field trip was at the Regal Bank where each child filled out a withdrawal slip and received $12 to put in their wallets to use at the shops designed to create a little community. Students then had a chance to explore the various immersive shops such as as Shop Rite, Linda’s Salon, The Print Shop, Team Gear, Words Bookstore, Jeff and Charlie’s Pet Shop, Ahuva’s Art Shop, Sarah Jane Flower Shop, RWJ Barnabus Health Doctor and Dentist.
They used their money to pay for each experience such as buying groceries, planting seeds, designing t-shirts, getting their nails done, buying books, writing and then mailing postcards, riding a bike, getting ice cream, buying popcorn and seeing a movie at the theater, and or visiting with a doctor or dentist. They got to make extra money by folding laundry at the Laundry Land, or organizing books at the book store.
The students also got to explore a sensory room, an indoor playground, a gym with basketball hoops, and a sandroom. Lifetown created a safe, supportive, and joyful atmosphere, allowing our students to fully participate, and enjoy the day.
Mrs. Nazarko's journalism class at Wayne Valley High School invited Broadcast Journalist Gina Somma Abdy to their class on March 19th. She discussed her career highlights with the students. Abdy has been working in the industry since the early 2000s. Some career highlights have included presidential election nights, award shows, fashion shows, Super Bowls, the Royal Wedding, and more! Recently, she has interviewed celebrities including Elmo and Abby, David Blaine, Kat Dennings, and Kristin Chenoweth. Students asked questions throughout the presentation and Abdy gave tips on interviewing, career life balance, and more! All of the students agree that they hope she comes back again soon!
We have some exciting news to share about our incredible eSports Gaming Club! Thursday, March 20th the Anthony Wayne Middle School talented team faced off against Plainfield High School and delivered a stunning performance that we can all be proud of.
They started the match with a remarkable shutout in round one, defeating Plainfield with a score of 13-0! Their teamwork and strategy were on full display. As they moved into round two, the competition heated up, with both teams closely matched at 4-2 early on. However, our players showed resilience and determination, ultimately closing out the round with a fantastic score of 13-5. This victory meant no need for a third round!
A special shoutout to our star players: Evan Strouse, Mikhail Tutkun, Tahsin Erol, Mazhar Demirors, and Arnav Muralidhar! Their hard work, communication, and sportsmanship were key to this win, and we are all so proud of you.

Did you know that Theunis Dey 3rd grade student Sasha Mordkovich won the bronze medal, placing 3rd in the nation at the U.S. Nationals in Ballroom Latin Dancing? A tremendous accomplishment in a packed field of contestants!
Lafayette Elementary recently hosted its very first Multicultural Night, and it was a joyful celebration of the diverse cultures that make up our school community. Seventeen families set up tables to share music, delicious food, and information about their heritage and the countries they come from. As visitors traveled around the “world,” they completed a Passport activity and earned a prize for visiting all of the countries and continents represented. Many students proudly wore traditional cultural outfits, adding even more color and excitement to the evening. In the hallways, beautiful displays created by each grade level showcased research and artwork focused on different continents. The event was a huge success thanks to the incredible hard work, creativity, and dedication of our students, staff, and families.
In celebration of NJ STEM Month, George Washington Middle School participated in NJ Makers Day at the GW Media Center. Embracing the “Spies, Ciphers, and Codes” theme, Library Media Specialist Tara Cooper Weiss curated eight stations to showcase spycraft and problem-solving skills. From cracking codes based on George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring to using blacklights and map coordinates to make connections about World War II Enigma Codes, students were tasked with finding solutions based on clues and the scientific method. Held on March 21, 22, and 24, all 495 of GW’s students participated in the event. Leading up to the days of hands-on learning, students were invited to take part in the Makers Day Mystery. Mrs. Weiss hid a prize in the school, and students were given five clues to crack the case. Using Morse Code, substitution ciphers, and frequency analysis, 83 students participated in the chase to see who could solve the puzzle first. The students to finish first were Andrew Losada, 8, Elon Tseytlin, 8, and Liev Tseytlin, 8. The second-place finisher was Anahit Balagyozyan, 7, and in third place were Aidan Brady, 6, Daniel Fermi, 6, Thomas Houghton, 6, and Ella Simsek, 6, who worked together to complete the puzzles.
The fourth grade students in Mrs. Radler’s class at A.P. Terhune Elementary, became scientists! They built and erupted their own volcanoes during science, and we loved seeing their teamwork in action (especially our first graders, who got to stop by and see the eruption)! 🔥🌋
During Read Across America Week, Pines Lakes School brought stories to life with an exciting celebration! Students enjoyed Mystery Readers sharing their favorite books, PJ Night, where teachers read their favorite picture books, and had a chance to be creative on Dress Like a Book Character Day. The week ended with an exciting Morning Show, where the winners of the Book Tasting were revealed for favorite books in the Media Center, as well as a special guest from CBS News, Alice Gainer. This fun-filled week was all about fostering a love of reading and imagination. Let’s turn the page on another great year of literacy and learning!
