Albert Payson Terhune Elementary students spend Earth Day outside!πππ³βοΈ
Schuyler Colfax 7th grade science students planted flowers in the courtyard and 8th grade students made posters for Earth Day.
Sixth graders designing coffee sleeves that were given out for Earth day, with messages and drawings about protecting our planet.
JFK Elementary had a weekend Earth Day clean up!
The weather for Earth Day was beautiful. John F. Kennedy students worked on sensory poetry outside and classes headed outside for book buddies, scavenger hunts, nature alliteration and more! πππ
George Washington Middle School celebrated Earth Day with activities designed to reduce, reuse, and repurpose. Science classes were held outside, in the courtyard, and in the media center, where students could choose stations to explore ecological activities, gardening, and creating with repurposed materials. Students created bird feeders, started seeds in cardboard rolls, and used found objects, like clothes pins and popsicle sticks, to transform them into art. All materials for the project were found in the school or donated by teachers. When the seeds are fully grown, they will be planted around the school.

Students in Ryersonβs 5th grade classes had learned about a token economy system in Social Studies, and teacher Mr. Michael Winand took the initiative to bring the practice to life.
During the French and Indian War, Great Britain protected the colonists. Due to their offered protections, they then demanded taxes. Their demands were excessive and unusual, such as putting taxes on stamps and the use of paper products, which were necessary for societal functioning. The colonists refused to pay these taxes, and this led to England getting into deep debt.
The students in the Social Studies classes received 10 tokens each, which were used to represent money. They were then expected to pay excessive taxes, for tasks that they were expected to do and had little to no control over. These tasks included entering the classroom, using a pencil, and writing in their math books. The students learned that taxes are fair, but excessive taxes are unfair.
As part of the experience, the students were given permission to βsmuggle,β just as many of the colonists had, if they were able to do so without getting caught. There were many attempts that tried and failed, and several that ended up making it past the teachers. Some of the tactics that worked with success were trips to the bathroom during tax time, and walking past the tax bin without submitting a payment. Sometimes, students went as far as to hide in the classroom! Overall, the feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive in regards to the token economy being a fun educational experience.

Ryerson, APT, JFK staff and other Wayne schools employees faced off against the Harlem Magic Masters in the annual charity basketball game sponsored by the Wayne Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse. During the game, the Magic Masters carried out tricks for entertainment as they played alongside our staff members. At the halftime show, Ryersonβs dance club showed off their hard work with a fusion dance featuring βCanβt Stop The Feeling!β & βStay,β in addition to other performances by cheerleaders, relay racers, and even a yoyoist!
The mission of the Wayne Alliance is to educate the public, and to provide insight into the necessary skills to enhance understanding of the benefits resulting from making healthy drug-free choices; they act as the official coordinating body for planning, awareness, and prevention education efforts working toward a drug, alcohol, and tobacco-free community. The basketball fundraiser is the largest annual fundraiser for the Alliance, and money raised from this event provides funding for public programs that are not part of their grant.
This was the 25th year the Alliance sponsored the basketball function, and it was a packed house with tickets being sold out. We look forward to having the opportunity to take part in this awesome event in the future, through both participation and support!
Junior Ambassadors, Student Council, and Service Club members at Schuyler Colfax Middle School placed notes of positivity on every studentβs locker this week. This project tied into our Character Ed. lesson for the month as we work on our beautiful school project.
The Photo 3 class at Wayne Hills hosted their annual Gallery Night featuring over 200 pieces of student artwork. This year's evening was a huge success, setting a new fundraising record in its seven-year history for the Photo Club.
Guests enjoyed an evening of incredible photography, live jazz music provided by the Wayne Hills Jazz Ensemble and light refreshments provided by Wayne Hills Foods students. It was a night to remember and a proud moment for our Photo 3 students who worked tirelessly to host this event.
