Special Education Week is being recognized in New Jersey from May 11th to 17th, with this year’s theme: "Planting the Seed of Education." This theme celebrates the foundational role education plays in the growth and success of all students, including those with disabilities.
Wayne’s commitment to inclusion is evident through its active participation in events like the Lincoln Tunnel Challenge 5K, The Gathering Spot, and the ongoing work of the Special Education Parents Advisory Group (SEPAG) and the Wayne Special Parents Association (WSPA). Additionally, our involvement in Unified Sports® showcases the power of teamwork and belonging by bringing students of all abilities together through athletics.
Inclusive events like the Turkey Trot 5K, scheduled this year for November 15th, continue to offer meaningful opportunities for all students to engage in recreation side by side, strengthening community bonds and celebrating shared experiences.
Creating safe, supportive environments like SEPAG and WSPA meetings, along with community gatherings through The Gathering Spot, provides families with invaluable opportunities to connect, share resources, and build a sense of belonging. We are especially grateful for the dedication of parents and guardians who participate in educational events that strengthen our community and enhance learning for all.
By continuing to raise awareness, celebrate accomplishments, expand inclusive programming, and offer meaningful engagement and professional development, Wayne is cultivating a culture that values and supports every learner.
Together, during Special Education Week and beyond, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive, grow, and reach their full potential.

World Language Classes Visit Hudson Table
Each year, the Schuyler Colfax World Language classes take a field trip in the spring to Hudson Table, a cooking school in Hoboken, New Jersey. The students learn how to make Italian, Spanish and French signature dishes, as well as important target language cooking terminology. The students work collaboratively to make culturally authentic meals including bunuelos, churros, fettuccine alfredo e marinara sauce, profiterole and pate de choux.
The students exhibit outstanding behavior and wonderful enthusiasm during our trip to Hudson Table. They represent our school so well, and we are so proud of each of them.
The staff at the cooking school were full of praise for their attitude, curiosity, and teamwork. They were especially impressed with how engaged they were and how much effort they put into each task.

The Adventures of Kiwi
We have introduced our bird mascot to the students with a naming contest. Each classroom came up with a name and then everyone in the school voted on the suggested names. Our mascot is now named Kiwi. She is a sunbird. She has begun to "fly" to each classroom where she engages with students and their classroom activities. The children then draw and write about what Kiwi did in class with them. These drawings, photos and words are creating a school book called Kiwi's Adventures. Kiwi will spend several days in each classroom and then the assembled book can be shared with all the things that Kiwi got to do at PECC. The children are VERY excited about Kiwi's visit! So far one class has made her a house to come back and visit! We look forward to the creativity of Kiwi's adventures!

Multicultural Night at JFK: A Passport to Community
JFK Elementary School held their Multicultural Night: A Passport to Community. A night full of culture, connection, and community! Thank you to all the families who shared their traditions, food, music, and pride with us. Our hearts (and bellies) were full. Click to view more photos: here and here.
Measuring Up and Pines Lake
Ms. Sosnov’s class finished their measuring unit, so we had a super fun activity! We used paper clips to measure parts of our bodies like our hands, feet, arms, and legs. We lined up the paper clips end to end and counted how many it took. It was like turning ourselves into measuring adventures! Everyone had so much fun seeing how long or short their body parts were using paper clips. What a great way to show what we learned about measuring! 📏🖇️

7th Grade SCMS PlastiVan Science Experience
PlastiVan is a program that talks to students about plastic engineering. While presenting the information, there are hands-on activities, demonstrations, discussions, and the ability for students to connect to real-life situations. This program ties into many of the units that students learn in seventh grade, including, but not limited to, chemical reactions, phase change, and matter and energy in ecosystems. Schuyler Colfax seventh grade students enjoyed this program guided by Ms. Bremer, Mrs. Murek, Mrs. Klink, Mrs. Masercola, Mrs. Buraszeski, Mrs. Petracco, and Mrs. O'Hagan.
