😜 Newsletter Riddle: How did the pumpkin get across the road? *answer at bottom
All nine elementary schools had visits this week from the local fire companies and our bus drivers to learn about fire and bus safety.
Shared from our Transportation Department:
It's illegal to pass a stopped school bus with its stop sign arm extended and red lights flashing!
If you are driving near a school bus, its red lights are flashing, and its stop arm is enacted, STOP! Those lights and stop arms signify children are getting on or off the bus and could be crossing the street.

“Whether a mile or a marathon, you get there the same way… one step at a time.” – Baylor Barbee.
I came to George Washington Middle School in January of 2024 as a 6th grade counselor. I have worked in a counselor capacity with students for over 15 years, and am beyond thrilled to be part of such an amazing community. In addition to my role as a counselor, I am an avid runner and coach. I have coached Track and Field, Winter Track and XC as well as the Striders Program for Wayne Rec. While balancing being a mom to two young children, I had to step back from field and track after school coaching, but am finding new ways to share my passion and love of running with my students at GW! In the Spring of 2024, I started a running program at GWMS called the “Dream Big Marathon Program”, a 10 week program designed by Boston Marathon Race Director, Dave McGillivray. I am currently in the process of starting an after school program at GWMS for XC and Winter Track and hope to bring the Dream Big Marathon Program back in the Spring of 2025 along with Girls on the Run!
In the meantime - I am humbled for the opportunity to run the London Marathon this upcoming April!! London will mark my 15th marathon, 4 World Major- and the icing on the cake is that I will be running to raise funds and awareness for those who have been impacted by Breast Cancer. In light of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I am so grateful to Wayne Public Schools for all of their support and for sharing my story.

At Wayne Valley High School, students in Mrs. Iannacco’s Italian classes worked on a project regarding the contributions of Italian Americans. Their research included findings that highlighted and honored the individual achievements of the Italian Americans they selected. It was a fun and educational project, in that it enriched the students, their peers, and our school community. The students’ Italian projects will be on display in the Wayne Valley Media Center for the staff and students to enjoy.
Italian American Heritage and Culture Month is celebrated in October. During this month, people celebrate the culture, traditions, and contributions of Italian Americans with a variety of events, including parades, concerts, exhibits, and lectures.
New York City represents Italian American Heritage with many events in October. The Italian Heritage and Culture Committee in NYC hosts events, concerts, exhibits, and lectures. The New York Public Library offers events such as book clubs related to Italian American Heritage. Other organizations such as NYCHA Italian American Association, Broadway Stages, and the Columbus Citizens Foundation, also do a great job of celebrating Italian culture this month. The Columbus Day Parade in NYC is the largest celebration of Italian American heritage, with over 35,000 marchers and at least one million spectators.
October is a wonderful month to celebrate Italian American heritage and culture!
Preakness Early Childhood Center is the proud recipient of a Smarty Board, an innovative health office communication board! Nurse Brienne Trignano and Multilingual Learner Specialist Nicole Dextraze collaborated to submit an application to Smarty Boards in hopes of fulfilling PECC’s goal of improving functional communication needs for a diverse group of learners. The communication board is strategically positioned at eye level in the health office. This ensures accessibility for all children and fosters a two-way communication with our youngest students. Preakness is committed to implementing creative solutions to improve communication access for all students. This is especially important in the health office when students may not feel well. Moving forward, we are looking to promote this board in other schools within our district. Integrating the health board into students’ AAC devices will also help mainstream communication throughout the young learner's life outside the classroom. What a great addition to our program!
