Penny wars was a HUGE success!! We crushed our goal and raised $2,467.41 for the Strong Momma Foundation!! Shout out to the second graders who raised $713.98!! Way to spread the love and show support, Cougars! You are amazing!
Parents of 8th Grade Science students were invited to expose students to different careers at Schuyler Colfax Middle School. All of the careers connected to a unit on energy that involved inventing a human powered device rescue workers can use to charge electronics. Our parent volunteers represented engineers, doctors, PSEG employees, entrepreneurs, psychotherapists, law enforcement, estheticians and more! Thank you to those who donated their time and experience!
On October 15, 2024, Wayne Valley High School Fashion teacher, Ms. Jesse Dean, and Environmental Science teacher, Ms. Sue-Anne Alonso, presented their innovative upcycling project at the New Jersey Science Convention. Their interdisciplinary collaboration focused on upcycling clothing that the students no longer used. Ms. Dean explains, “Upcycling is taking a garment of low value that is destined to be thrown out and making it into an item of high value that will be reused and treasured.”
This project not only engaged students in the Engineering Design Process, but also shed light onto their understanding of the fashion industry’s environmental impact. Did you know that American consumers dispose of an average of 81.5 lbs of clothing per person each year? With the fashion industry now producing up to 52 collections annually, the environmental consequences are significant—from the farming industry to produce natural fibers, the petroleum industry to produce polyester fabrics, global shipping for manufacturing, and then shipping back to developed countries for sales. Each step of the process contributes to carbon emissions and other greenhouse gasses that contribute to climate change. Unsold new and used clothing often ends up in landfills in underdeveloped countries, where it adds to methane emissions and causes other environmental issues.
How do we know this project made a difference? Many of the senior students who participated in the upcycling project last June showed up at the Senior Sunrise event with upcycled shirts and track pants to celebrate their status as seniors!
On Saturday, October 26th, The Wayne Hills Glamour Gals club visited the Care One Assisted Living Home in Wayne, NJ. The club "glamoured" the senior citizens by painting their nails, applying light makeup, and even escorted the citizens down an aisle in costumes for a very successful Halloween fashion show! As always, the Glamour Gals club made the entire assisted living home smile. Follow them (@glamourgals.whhs) for more Glamour Gal news in the weeks to come!
Thank you to Officer Collins for educating the Packanack students on cyber safety!
The Wayne Fire Department came to Theunis Dey to teach our kindergarten and 1st grade students about fire safety and familiarization of the fire truck.
The Randall Carter School Media Specialist, Colleen Lee, was promoting the award winning chapter book series, The Wild Robot by: Peter Brown. The students in second through fifth grade were loving the read alouds, and coding their own robots in media. The P.T.O. President, Donna Wajda, worked to help Mrs. Lee rent out the entire Wayne Cinemark movie theater for the kids to see The Wild Robot movie together on a Sunday. After reading the book, this was a great way to visit the powerful themes of kindness, love and loss. All the kids were chatting together about reading the sequels on the way out of the theater. The kids had an amazing experience with their families, classmates and teachers. Long range activities like these help foster a love of reading, technology and friendship.
