Wayne Hills Athlete of January 2026: Sadie Valencia |
Wayne Hills senior Sadie Valencia has been named the school’s Athlete of the Month after a dominant January that showcased her consistency on the strip and her leadership within the fencing program.
A sabre specialist, Valencia finished the month of January with 40 wins and just five losses, turning in multiple undefeated dual meets and strong performances in tournament play.
“Sadie has had a tremendous season for us this year,” Wayne Hills Athletic Director Ryan Bayley said. “She is a leader on and off the strip and a true competitor. We are really looking forward to her finishing the season strong and will be missed next year, as she graduates in the spring.”
During January, Valencia went undefeated against West Milford, Indian Hills, Fair Lawn, Butler, Teaneck, Ramapo, and Passaic Valley, highlighted by a 13–0 showing at the Santelli Tournament on Jan. 17. She also delivered key bouts at the Passaic County Tournament, finishing 4–2 in the team round and 3–2 in individual competition.
Wayne Hills fencing coach Christina Caamano said Valencia’s growth over her four years with the program has been central to her senior-year success.
“Sadie has been a starter since sophomore year and dedicates an immense amount of time and energy to polishing her individual skills in and out of season,” Caamano said. Article by John "Ferris" Meredith/Photo by Chad Thompson Read more at TapIntoWayne |
| Wayne Valley Athlete of January 2026: Ben Cooper |
Multi-sport athlete Benedetto (Ben) Cooper has been having a remarkable senior year. He was named captain of the Wayne Valley football team in the fall and captain of the wrestling team this winter, and had great success in both sports, earning the Young Man of the Year nomination for football and now Athlete of the Month for wrestling.
Cooper entered January undefeated in the heavyweight wrestling division, continued his streak all month and now stands at 19-0 on the season. His highlight in January was winning the heavyweight Passaic County title, defeating DePaul Catholic’s Max Georges in the finals in, likely, his toughest bout of the year. The two went toe-to-toe for three rounds, which ended in a tie. In the extra sudden-victory round, Cooper prevailed, earning the title, and then went right back into the grind of the regular season.
Cooper’s impact has gone beyond the football field and wrestling mat, according to Wayne Valley Athletic Director, Jason Carcich.
“I could not be happier to recognize Ben Cooper as our Athlete of the Month for January,” he said. “Ben is enjoying an outstanding senior season and continues to make a positive impact on our athletic program. He has a contagious personality that everyone in the building appreciates, along with a strong work ethic and natural leadership skills.” Article by John "Ferris" Meredith/Photo by Jeff Lally Read more at TapIntoWayne
