Wayne Schools Celebrate Read Across America! |
|
|
John F. Kennedy Elementary |
JFK Elementary School had a lot of great things happening for Read Across America. Spirit days, visits from Therapy Dogs, classroom read-alouds, a book battle, a visit from William Paterson Student Athletes, and a visit from the Passaic County Sheriff's Department where they read a book to students in grades K-2 that two of the officers wrote and illustrated. The kids LOVED it!! |

Ryerson Elementary School |
|
|
In celebration of National Read Across America Week, Ryerson was honored to welcome Superior Court Judge Daniel Brown, who visited to read with our 1st and 2nd grade students. Judge Brown shared two of his favorite Dr. Seuss classics, Hop on Pop and Green Eggs and Ham.
Judge Brown was incredibly engaging and enthusiastic, bringing the stories to life and capturing the attention of every student in the room. Our students loved the experience, and it was a wonderful way to celebrate the joy of reading. We are so grateful that Judge Brown took time out of his busy day to visit Ryerson and share his love of books with our young readers. |

Theunis Dey Elementary School |
Media Specialist, Keri DelloBuono and Reading Specialist, Liz Sponenburg collaboratively planned several fun-filled activities to celebrate Read Across America at Theunis Dey. Grades 3 through 5 students celebrated with a fun and engaging event called βThe Masked Reader,β inspired by the popular TV show The Masked Singer. Thirteen Theunis Dey staff members volunteered and were filmed reading excerpts from books by Dr. Seuss, with digital filters disguising their faces. Mrs. Sponenburg was the videographer of the project.
All students in Grades 3 through 5 gathered for βThe Masked Readerβ assembly hosted by Mrs. DelloBuono, where they competed to guess the identity of each masked reader. After a close and exciting competition, the 4th graders claimed victory by a very small margin. The event kept students highly engaged and provided a joyful celebration of reading.
Grades Kβ2 students celebrated Read Across America by participating in a Storybook STEM activity centered around this yearβs theme, βReading Is Out of This World.β Mrs. Sponenburg read Mousetronaut by Astronaut Mark Kelly to each class, inspiring students with a space-themed adventure.
As a follow-up, Mrs. DelloBuono led hands-on STEM activities that encouraged creativity and problem-solving. Students engineered straw rockets and tested out their designs. Students continued space-themed LEGO challenges, and practiced coding by guiding a mouse through the planets in the Media Center. The engaging activities combined literacy and STEM, making the celebration both educational and fun.
Students also took part in the PTO-sponsored Book Fair, exploring a wide selection of books and celebrating their love of reading. Later in March, author Rachelle Burk will visit Theunis Dey to share insights into the writing process and speak about her journey as an author. |

Albert P. Terhune Elementary School |
APT kicked off RAA with a visit from the Jackals baseball to promote our reading incentive. We continued the week with guest readers: current staff members, former teachers and teachers students will have in the future at Schuyler Colfax (5th graders had SCMS Teachers Healy, Vogel and Olaya reading to them). The week ended with older students reading with younger students to promote βBuddy Readingβ. Even Mrs Heaney and Ms DeMayo joined in the buddy reading fun! It was a fun filled week!
