Empathy, Understanding, and Overcoming Challenges: Dr. Kerry Magro Inspires SCMS Students |
6th and 7th graders from Schuyler Colfax Middle School were present for a talk with Kerry Magro, Ed.D. Dr. Magro spoke from the heart about his personal challenges with autism and bullying growing up, as well as the successes he found later in life through public speaking. He connected with students through his love of basketball, music, and sharing stories of celebrities with differing abilities. He also spoke with our students about what it means to be a true ally and friend through empathy, understanding, and communication. Our students were wonderfully receptive, engaged, and eager to share thoughts and questions at the end. We thank Dr. Magro for his time today with our Schuyler family!
Dr. Kerry Magro was non-verbal until age 2.5, diagnosed with autism at 4, and didnβt speak in full sentences until age 7. Today, he is an award-winning autistic professional speaker, best-selling author, and consultant to Netflixβs Emmy-Award Winning Series Love on the Spectrum U.S. and HBOβs Mrs. Fletcher. Over the past 14 years, Dr. Magro has spoken at over 1,400 events, including two TEDx Talks and talks at Google. |

Read Across America at Pines Lake |
Pines Lake Elementary had an exciting and memorable Read Across America Week filled with fun, creativity, and a love of reading! The students kicked off the celebration on Monday with Silly Hat Day while enjoying visits from mystery readers in the Media Center. The surprise guest readers made storytime extra special and kept students guessing who might read next. On Tuesday, students came to school in their coziest pajamas, and our Kβ2 students gathered for a reading celebration in the evening. They enjoyed listening to stories read by teachers while receiving cookies, bookmarks, and book themed temporary tattoos, making the evening both relaxing and fun. On Wednesday students were encouraged to share a bit about themselves by wearing a shirt from their favorite place in the world. The excitement continued on Thursday with Wild Sock Day and animal prints throughout the school. Students also enjoyed an amazing author visit from Christopher Grabenstein, who shared about his life as a writer and inspired students to use their imagination when creating their own stories. The week concluded on Friday with students dressing up as characters from their favorite books, bringing beloved stories to life throughout the halls.

Pines Lake students also finished reading the One School, One Book, Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library, by Christopher Grabenstein. As a part of this initiative, students gathered puzzles and games for children in need. Pines Lake students reached and exceeded their donation goal for this project, collecting an incredible 185 games, puzzles, and LEGO sets for children at the Boys & Girls Club of Paterson and Oasis β A Haven for Women and Children. Thanks to the generosity and hard work of the students and families, the donations will bring fun, creativity, and comfort to many children in our neighboring community. Seeing the joy on the childrenβs faces as they received the games was a beautiful and heartwarming moment that perfectly captured the spirit of giving behind this project. It was a joyful week filled with creativity, community, and a shared love of reading!
